Zimbabwe Vigil Diary 16th December 2023

The last Vigil of 2023 continued our protest against the human rights abuse and lack of democracy in Zimbabwe.

Zanu PF’s continued two-pronged attack on democracy: silencing perceived opponents through abductions, torture and murder, and decimating opposition members of Parliament through spurious recalls, caused our Vigil activists to express alarm at the deteriorating human rights situation in Zimbabwe.

The Zanu PF government remains unperturbed by regional, continental and international condemnation of its conduct of the 23 August 2023 harmonised election. To make the situation worse, there appears to be no meaningful alternative strategies or remedies to hold Mnangagwa’s government to account. The situation has literally turned to rule by the gun rather than the rule of law.

However it is encouraging that Vigil activists remain resolute on a quest for a just and free Zimbabwe. As such, they have vowed to not only continue but escalate the campaign, come 2024.

Thanks to those who came today: Simbarashe Jingo, Chido Michelle Makawa,  Philip Maponga, Patricia Masamba, Mashama Mazise, Victor Mhlaba, Ephraim Tapa and Fulya Felicity Turkmen. For photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/zimbabwevigil/albums/72177720313459506.

The Vigil was followed by the ROHR Christmas social event, an enjoyable time for all those who attended. For photos:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/zimbabwevigil/albums/72177720313478224.

  • The Vigil’s book ‘Zimbabwe Emergency’ is based on our weekly diaries. It records how events in Zimbabwe have unfolded as seen by the diaspora in the UK. It chronicles the economic disintegration, violence, growing oppression and political manoeuvring – and the tragic human cost involved. It is available at the Vigil. All proceeds go to the Vigil and our sister organisation the Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe’s work in Zimbabwe. The book is also available from Amazon.
