Bwalya captures 2025 BCM elite section

International Master Gillian Bwalya captured the 2025, even after losing the first round game to Fide Master Chola Musonda. He rose from the ashes winning the other 6 games and drawing one game against Timothy Kabwe. In the process he defeated Fide Master JHoseph Mwale in a pulsating game which left onlookers in awe.

The tournament was very tough and at one time it seemed as if IM Phiri was running away with the Title, alas it was not to be as the Captain thwarted this dream in round 7.

The players who lost to Captain Charlie are as follows: CM Godwin Phiri in round two, Fide Master Geofrey Luanja in round 3. Round four can be regarded as the IM,s best game of the tournament.

He sacrificed a knight which led to an inevitable checkmate after the sacrifice, whether the knight was captured or not. Minerva Open Champion Justin Daka was left clutching thin air after the loss to IM Bwalya, then  against the inform Mwale in another blockbuster game which he won. This was in round five.

In round 6 he had a truce against Timothy Kabwe in a solid game which was indeed a draw. IM Richmond Phiri lost to the formidable Bwalya in round 7 and finally round 8 saw Fide Master Douglas Munenga popularly known as the ‘Gate keeper’ lost in a subtle game which saw Bwalya winning the 2025 BCM chess championship in the Elite Section. Meanwhile in the ladies section Woman Candidate Master Lubuuto Bwalya won the section after defeating Dziyanyi Tanaka from Zimbabwe who is her toughest rival. Coinstance Mbatha came second with 6 points followed by Tanaka Dizyani of Zimbabwe and Otimile Maya of Botswana.
