The Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No 3) Bill, 2026, was published in a Gazette Extraordinary this afternoon. It proposes, amongst other things:
- that the President should be elected by Parliament rather than by voters in a general election
- that the President’s term of office, and the life of Parliament, should be extended by two years
- that these changes should apply to the current President and Members of Parliament, so that the next general election will be held in 2030 rather than 2028.
The Bill can be accessed on the Veritas website [link].
We shall issue a further bulletin in the near future, analysing the Bill in more detail.
