Zimbabwe’s largest mobile network operator said it is consulting closely with Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, to restore access for affected users.
“Econet Wireless wishes to assure customers that it is actively addressing the recent incidents involving blocked or compromised WhatsApp accounts,” Econet said in a statement.
“Working in consultation with Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, Econet is supporting affected customers to restore access to their accounts and continues to closely monitor the situation.
“Customers requiring further assistance can dial the dedicated Econet short code 658 for WhatsApp-specific support. All our service centres, Econet Shops, digital and social media platforms also remain available to offer customer support.
“As a precaution, customers are urged to remain vigilant by enabling passkeys and two-step authentication or verification on their WhatsApp accounts.
“Customers should never share their PINs, passwords or one-time passwords with anyone, and should exercise caution when responding to unfamiliar calls and messages.
“Customers should also avoid clicking suspicious links and be sure to independently verify any requests for money — even when they appear to come from someone they know.”
