TOP sprinter Brian Dzingai has qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games after running a personal best of 20,32 seconds in the 200 metre final during the International Association of Athletics Federations ExxonMobil Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway
Dzingai came second to claim a silver medal at the event and joins sprinter Lewis Banda and top swimmer Kirsty Coventry on the list of athletes who have made it to next year’s Games.
IAAF had set 20,59 seconds as the A qualifying standard for the games and 20,75 seconds as the B standard, but Dzingai turned on the power to slash the two standard time by 0,27 seconds and 0,43 seconds respectively.
Dzingai was beaten to the finishing line by Johan Wissman of Sweden in a photo finish, although they both recorded the same time.
This means that Dzingai picks up 16 points for coming second, as the race for a slot in the finals of the Golden League continues.
The Golden League has prize money of US$1 million. Wissman picked up 20 points for coming first.
Saidy Ndure Jaysuma of Gambia was third in 20,53 seconds, Paul Hession of Ireland came fourth with a time of 20,53 seconds as well. Ainsley Waugh of Jamaica completed the top five coming home 0,9 seconds later.
