Zim Under 19 Rugby team wins (26-07-07)

The Zimbabwe Under 19 rugby side have notched up their second win in the Under 19 Africa Zone World Cup qualifiers after beating Morocco 19-7 in Kampala, the Ugandan ca

pital on yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon.

According to reports from Kampala, the Young Sables scored two tries, the first in the first half through Eaglesvale scumhalf Andy McKeen. Captain and flyhalf Tich Makwanya of Prince Edward converted, as he would do the second half try by Churchill flank Njabulo Ndlovu. National team trialist Makwanya then scored a penalty in the second half.

Zimbabwe are now in a good position to qualify for their third Under 19 World Cup if they beat fellow southern Africans Namibia on Thursday. Speaking from Kampala , the Under 19 technical committee chairman Aaaron Jani said: “The boys were (against Morocco) very disciplined, very spirited, they did very well.”

On the side’s chances against Namibia , he commented: “Our chances are very high, but the teams are evenly matches. We will give our best.”

Coached by former Zimbabwe national player and coach Brighton Chivandire, the Young Sables acquitted themselves well in their first match on Monday, beating Tunisia14-10.

Zimbabwe select’s bowlers were made to toil on Day 1 of their first four-day match against India A at Harare Sports Club.

The touring Indians closed at stumps on 331/5, opener Robin Uthappa top-scoring with 88 runs. He was eventually dismissed by Zimbabwe skipper Prosper Utseya, with Ed Rainsford taking the catch.

Also in the runs for India A were Rohit Sharma (66), captain Mohammad Kaif (63) and Parthiv Patel (57). Utseya and allrounder Elton Chigumbura had taken two wickets each, with pace bowler Chris Mpofu claiming the other.

Zimbabwe need to do well in this two four-day series to kick-start in earnest their quest for a return to the Test arena.

Former Zimbabwe skipper Tatenda Taibu is playing. He has returned to the Zimbabwe team after deciding that his international career was more important than the feud between him and the Zimbabwe cricket chiefs which resulted in his walkout.
