HARARE – Zimbabwe’s senior soccer team rose six places up the ladder on the Fifa/Coca-Cola world rankings, to number 87 with 383 points, despite not kicking a ball since their match against Malawi last month.
That is six places better than last month’s 93rd place, and they gained 14 points on September’s ranking.
Zimbabwe are also back in the top 20 on the Confederation of African Football rankings, as they moved three places up into 19th position.
In gaining three places on the African rankings, Zimbabwe moved above Algeria, Libya and the Cape Verde Islands.
This year saw Zimbabwe slump to 101, the worst-ever ranking for Zimbabwe since
1993 when the standings were introduced.
The latest rankings mean that Zimbabwe are assured of a favourable draw when Fifa conduct the pairings for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, which will also be used to determine finalists for the Nations Cup finals set for Angola.
The draw will be conducted in Durban, South Africa, on November 25, two days after Fifa would have released the November rankings.
