HARARE – Two junior golfers, Tarisai Chihambakwe and Rumbi Masamvu, are part of the 10-member Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) team shortlisted for the All Africa Challenge Trophy to be held in Cairo, Egypt early next year.
The final team for the event, which will run from 26 April to1 May next year, will be named in March next year.
Helen van Renburg, ZLGU spokesperson, said the 10 were shortlisted after their stellar performances this season.
The other golfers are Claire Minter, Rhoda Muridzo, Jessie Nyakatawa, Becky Pasi (all Harare Provinces). Esther Dzinga (Mashonaland West), Polly Crewe, Sally Preston (Manicaland) and Mitchell Bucholtz (Matabeleland).
Van Renburg said national selectors would monitor that 10-member team.
At the last edition of the All Africa Challenge Trophy, contested by 20 countries in Zambia, the Zimbabwe team, – represented by captain Jessie Nyakatawa, Masamvu, and Trish Swannack – finished in fourth place.
The AACT was inaugurated as a biennial event in Harare, at Chapman Golf Club in 1992, with 12 countries participating.
The best two gross scores from three rounds played by teams from each country, will win the trophy.
In 1998, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews assisted the competition for the first time with financial sponsorship. This continued in an ad hoc basis in 2000 and 2002.
Former Zimbabwe ladies champion, Tessa Covell, Chairman of the Trustees, visited St Andrews and persuaded the R & A to commit themselves to help the event for a further 10 years.
This year’s championship has received financial backing of the world golf body, the Royal & Ancient Golf Society of St Andrews which injected £28, 000 for the hosting of the event next year.
