The MIC which ceased to exist in January 2008 following the signing into law of amendments to the repressive Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA), notified Hungwe of the ban in a letter dated 26 February 2008. MISA-Zimbabwe therefore insists that anything purportedly done by the MIC after 11 January 2008 is of no legal force and should be declared null and void.Hungwe is a former correspondent with the South African Broadcasting
Corporation (SABC). The ban against him was backdated to 20 August 2007
following his appeal against the MIC decision banning him from working
as a freelance journalist in Zimbabwe. The MIC’s illegal ban will be in
force until 19 August 2008.MISA condemns in the strongest terms the MIC’s decision as it is not only illegal but vindictively designed to curtail media freedom and freedom of expression ahead of the 29 March 2008 elections. The continued existence of the Dr Tafataona Mahoso- led Media and Information Commission is not only illegal but an affront to media and freedom of expression. – MISA
