Warriors to maintain leading position

BY GRACE CHIRUMANZU
The Warriors clash with Kenya, in Nairobi on June 14. This will be a potentially explosive encounter, of the 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, as Namibia host Guinea in Windhoek.

Zimbabwe is currently leading the pack in the continental group 2 log standings with four points, after the superb 2-0 win and a crucial goalless draw against Namibia and Guinea, respectively.

Their opponents have a good record at home after beating Guinea 2-0 in Nairobi June 7.

The Warriors will be hosting Kenya at Rufaro stadium on June 22, followed by a three month rest before they host Guinea on September 7 and tour Namibia a month later. Warriors’ hero on Sunday, Gilbert Mushangazhike, knows the importance of maintaining the lead and keeping the winning spirit.

“It was difficult to play on the artificial turf, but considering that both teams were playing on the same pitch, we had to put that aside and take advantage of playing at home. Now that we are on top of the log, we have to stay positive and have an attitude of taking each game as it comes, Mushangazhike told reporters.

The group winners from the 12 continental groups, together with the best eight runners-up will advance to Round Three. The 20 teams will then be grouped into 5 round-robin, home-and-away groups of 4 teams.

The winners from each of the five groups win the available five African slots into the 2010 World Cup.

A total of 200 teams, worldwide, have since entered the race for the available 31 places. South Africa is the only team, which has qualified for the global showpiece, by virtue of being the host nation.
