300 cyclists to tour Mapungubwe

cyclists_atworkOver 300 international cyclists are expected to cycle more than 300 km in the Tour de Tuli Mapungubwe cycle meant for Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana, on August 3-7. Mapungubwe is an area that divides the three southern African countries as it touches the outskirts of Zimbabwe in the south and south-western outskirts in Matabeleland.

The ride is set to begin at the Limpopo Valley Airfield in Botswana on August 3 and move into Zimbabwes Fort Tuli area, two days later. The riders will cycle past Maramani communal lands and head for Sentinel Ranch in inland Zimbabwe before crossing over for their finish at the Mapungubwe National Park, in South Africa.

South Africa is set to provide the largest number of participants with 240 cyclists. Meanwhile, 15 riders are expected from the United Kingdom, one representative from Bulgaria, Ireland, Italy and Canada, five from Holland, two from Germany, Spain and Switzerland as the United States and Australia will be represented by three each to give the race a remarkable international taste.

Environmental and Natural Resources Management Minister, Francis Nhema, has taken this as an opportunity for Zimbabwe to market its beautiful lands.

“This cycle tour is an amazing mountain bike event that is going to involve over 300 sponsored cyclists. It is not a race but a ride allowing cyclists and journalists an incredible and rare opportunity of really appreciating our wilderness areas by riding through wonderful wild areas and scenic countryside that they normally cant access, said Nhema.
