ZAPU statement on SADC summit

zapu_logoZAPU calls on the SADC Heads of States and Government summit starting in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo today not to tolerate any more excuses from the parties in Zimbabwes inclusive government. The performance of the inclusive government since its formation in March has convinced us that they are creating cosmetic disputes within themselves so as to delay the

Zapu notes with concern that Zanu-PF and the two MDCs have failed to implement an agreement they voluntarily entered into to constitute a transitional government and allow the country back to democracy for citizens to enjoy a truly normal and prosperous life. We feel time has come for SADC to compel the feuding parties to either resolve the so-called outstanding issues in the Global Political Agreement, or admit that the inclusive government is not working and allow SADC Heads of State and government to assist Zimbabweans find another way forward.

All hopes that the people of Zimbabwe had in the inclusive government continue to thin by the day as it becomes clear that all the leadership of Zanu-PF and the two MDCs wanted was to share positions of power within themselves, and leave the people of Zimbabwe to endure more years of incomplete lives where access to water, electricity, education, food, shelter, and freedom, among other human rights, continue to be a privilege. Zimbabweans deserve more than just food and groceries in supermarkets. They need a properly elected government as a matter of urgency to lead them in restoring the nation, which sadly the inclusive government is not prepared to do.

Zapu is saddened by the delaying tactics being employed by the inclusive government by creating drama and intrigue in the constitution making process through unnecessary squabbles and delays. It would appear those in the inclusive government realize they are in power by accident, and want to deny the people of Zimbabwe the opportunity to draft a new constitution and put in place a government of their choice. Zapu believes it is the duty of fellow Africans, particularly our neighbours in SADC, to rescue Zimbabwe at this hour from the ever tightening grip of the club of power mongers calling themselves the inclusive government of Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans can not continue to suffer just because parties want their own appointees to occupy this or that office. What we need are sound policies underpinned by a democratic constitution crafted by the people. The rest of the things will fall into place.

Zapu prays that the SADC Heads of State and Government summit will be firm and fair and push the three parties to move expeditiously with the democratic reform agenda for the benefit of Zimbabweans. While Zapu is totally against any form of sanctions against Zimbabwe, the party feels it is wrong for Zanu-PF chefs and their acquaintances to try and nationalize targeted sanctions slapped on themselves as individuals by the US and the EU.

Zapu calls on the leadership of SADC to do what is best and possible to assist the people of Zimbabwe to achieve true democracy.

Thank you.
