DA uses bush toilet

bush_toilet.jpegMVUMA An outbreak of disease is feared in the area as most parts of town have been without water for more than four months. A follow up visit to the town late last week confirmed that there were parts of the area where toilets had since been closed down for lack of water.

Sources at the District Administrator’s Office said the water problems were the major reason why court proceedings were no longer done in Mvuma.

“The court sessions are now being done at Chivu. Everyone has to travel there and many cannot afford the transport costs, said a source at the courts.

The District Administrator’s Office, the Social services Department and several others accommodated at the DA’s offices have had to use the nearby bush following the closure of the toilets.

“There are plans to build a Blair toilet for temporary use because at the moment everyone, including the District Administrator, is using the bush. This is a health hazard because the bush is just a 50m stretch between the DA’s offices and the residential houses behind the offices. Some people from the residence also use the same bush,” said a source.

Residents expressed their frustration with the situation, drawing attention to the local dams that could be utilised.

“There are several dams surrounding the town and I don’t understand why the water is not being tapped for domestic use. Even development levels will continue to be low because of the water situation in the town and as residents we tend to lose out on many services,” said Craig Chiasha, a businessman in the town.
