Border upgrades unlikely

FORBES Despite promises by the Sport and Tourism Task force to computerize the immigration department at Forbes Border last year, a survey by this paper indicated that ....

with only five months until the 2010 World Cup kicks off, nothing has been put in place.

Regional Immigration Officer, Vincent Mukombero, confirmed to The Zimbabwean last week that the post had not received computers from the government and this was likely to cause unnecessary delays and inconvenience to visitors.

Mukombero said the current manual system had also contributed to human trafficking at the border because they could not trace travelers.

He added that Zimbabwe was going to miss out on the UNVISA system which was being mooted by Southern African countries during the World Cup 2010. UNVISA is a system designed to promote tourism by allowing visitors during the World Cup to use a single visa at any point of entry.

During peak times, Forbes Border handles around 4,000 travelers.
