The municipality has approved R56 million to ensure the effective hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. We have also launched a clean up operation, where 300 people are cleaning our town in 13 sections that have been identified, said Boshoff.

We want to ensure that the 2010 event is as successful as possible but this will also depend on our residents who we hope will make the visitors welcome, he added. Rustenburg will host six matches of the June tournament, which will be played at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace. A visitors centre has also been established, where tourists and fans are able to get detailed information concerning the city and the North West Province. England who are the 1966 World Cup champions and one of the popular teams taking part in this years edition of the competition will be based in Rustenburg and will kick-off their World Cup campaign against the United States of America (USA).

Olympia Park, which is another football stadium in the city, will be used by South Korea as their training base. While Rustenburg is expected to generate a lot of money from hosting a tournament with such a huge magnitude, ordinary residents are also hoping that the spectacle will also benefit them economically in a huge way. Meanwhile, the 2010 World Cup FIFA Local Organizing Committee (LOC) is encouraging home owners to consider renting their properties to international World Cup fans in order to alleviate an expected shortage of accommodation in the city.
