ZIFA owes US$300 000 to hotels, Chidzambwa

zifaHARARE -- The cash-strapped Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) owes up to US$300 000 to various creditors including up to $30 000 the soccer body owes to former national team coach Sunday Chidzambwa.

ZIFA is also said owe a significant sum of money to Chidzambwas predecessor as Warriors mentor, the Brazilian Jose Valinhos. Sunday Chidzambwa, who replaced Valinhos as Warriors coach in 2008 tendered his resignation letter to ZIFA chief executive Henrietta Rushwaya last Monday, to take up a coaching job in South Africa. Chidzambwa, who was also the Dynamos director of coaching, has signed a two-year deal with Free State Stars effective from May 1 and could sit on the bench this weekend when they play Mpumalanga Black Aces in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup at Charles Mopeli Stadium.

Chidzambwa quit his post just three days after the new ZIFA board led by prominent Harare businessman Cuthbert Dube had held their inaugural meeting in the capital. Sources, who attended the meeting held at Dubes residence last Friday owing to the non-availability of cash to book a venue, said the virtually insolvent association that owed money to a number of hotels and other institutions. According to one board member, ZIFA urgently needs a substantial inject of cash to save it from collapse.

We had a very good meeting and all the board members were present; it was very constructive. We are in a serious crisis and we need an urgent financial injection in order for us to start moving forward,” said the board ember, who declined to be named.
