The excitement, the unity, the enthusiasm, the Umoja (togetherness) of it accompanied by the buzzing sounds of the vuvuzela has been awesome to watch. I can only imagine how proud and amazing it would be to be inside the stadium where the World Cup games are going to be played in or just to be in South Africa.
The World Cup event of football matches has obviously boosted the South African Economy and that of its neighbours. Thousands of foreigners have travelled to South Africa to be part of history. Foreigners to the country have obviously booked hotels, bought and still buying stuff and ornaments to bring back home. Which financial ministry or country wouldnt marvel to the thought of such an opportunity? South Africa is obviously living that dream.
People from other countries are no doubt enjoying being in a different country, learning and experiencing the Africas rainbow nation culture and hospitality. The African atmosphere is one of the most refreshing. Visitors to the country will surely be humbled to be in the land of one of the greatest man in the world, Nelson Mandela (Madiba), which is just the icing on the cake. The South African team, Bafana Bafana have called this event a blessing for it to be held on their soil.
Feminists are probably cursing this article as they read on and try to make sense of the angle I am coming from and my ‘naive’ or rather loose view of assessing that ‘this is a man’s world’. My mother, a proud African, who is a feminist will surely stress her strong opinions after reading this and will probably try to re-educate me of the way of the unfair world and its ‘patriarchal society’, that is on its way to the goal post. As a woman myself, I believe that women and men are equals and that we are very much leading and stepping into a symmetrical society. Much appreciation of course is due to the feminists who have over the years worked tirelessly for equality between men and women, hence, there are also women playing football and other sports, which were previously regarded for men.
The World Cup (2010) has been featured in the papers and television everyday and constantly. Newspaper articles and TV reports and programmes have been featuring the sport event, details and the goings-on. This tournament will see teams of men playing against each other to win the golden trophy. The TV reports of preparations towards the World Cup matches have been running for the past several months and are so informative to highlight the extent of how passionate people are about the game. The reports have managed to influence some of those who are ignorant about the sport as this event is, by most people, considered a world event. Other reports have showed how some people in the UK have decorated their houses in red and white. People are wearing the same those colours, stores are selling ornaments in those colours as well as football gear, all to show support and patriotism for the UK’s national team. Football fans who could not travel to South Africa for different reasons are gathering in pubs and restaurants.
A game of football, played by 22 ‘men’, a match has done all this, it has managed to bring people and harmonise the entire nation through a unique and colourful event. Football, a sport played in 90 minutes, by fit men who will obviously be under immense pressure to win, has managed to bring joy into people’s lives, boost the economy and most of all entertain and conform people to peaceful gatherings and celebrations.
Like the late legendary soul singer James Brown sang, This is a man’s world, but it would be nothing – nothing without a woman. Hence I am contemplating which football gear I am going to buy to show support for the national team while at the same time I will be helping to boost the economy – regardless of my ‘passion’ for the sport and the games. Waka waka.Best of luck to all the teams.
