Mrs Lesabe burial set for Saturday

thenjiwe_lesabiTHE late Chairperson of the Zapu Council of Elders and liberation war heroine, Mrs Thenjiwe Virginia Lesabe (Pictured), will be laid to rest on Saturday at her farm in Fort Rixon, Insiza district of Matabeleland South province.

Mrs Lesabes funeral has been delayed following requests by family members and Zapu supporters in and outside Zimbabwe for more time to make it for the event. There will be a memorial service on Friday in Bulawayo at a venue to be confirmed to afford city residents a chance to bid farewell to Mrs Lesabe. Zapu is working closely with the Lesabe family to organize all logistics such as transport, feeding and the programme of events for the funeral.

Zapu takes this opportunity to re-iterate that we will not let anyone, no matter how powerful, violate Mrs Lesabes wish that she be laid to rest at her farm. We appreciate that Mrs. Lesabe was a prominent national leader, who under normal circumstances would have been interred at the once respectable national shrine in Harare. However, events in her life, and indeed the conduct of the custodians of that shrine, obviously made her stress the point that she did not want to be buried there. May her wish be respected.

For the avoidance of any doubt, Zapu will no longer bother itself with who Zanu-PF declares or does not declare a hero. We are the founder and authentic liberation movement of Zimbabwe and therefore will not submit ourselves to a rival, splinter movement to tell us amongst us who is a hero and who is not. Let Zanu-PF keep its heroes acre. Our hearts are our heroes acre.

Zapu welcomes all political parties, civic organizations, religious institutions, business organizations, farming associations, traditional leadership, and indeed all Zimbabweans to be with us during our dark hour. We will however be alert for those who have developed a sickening tendency of trying to use other peoples grief as an opportunity to gain political mileage they do not deserve.
