Eight contractors have been engaged to rehabilitate the 440km highway. Each has been set a target of 20km by the end of the year.
The contractors returned to site after the government secured a US$400 million infrastructure financing package to accelerate the upgrade of three major highways, that is, Beitbridge/Harare, Harare/Chirundu and Bulawayo/Victoria Falls.
“Government has secured funding, and the contractors are back on site, and we expect them to speed up the construction and rehabilitation works as some sections of the highway are in a terrible state,” said Moyo.
He said contractors must prioritise the worst-damaged sections to reduce travel times for motorists.
“I have instructed Engineer Xolani Ncube, the Matabeleland roads engineer, to relay this message to contractors,” he added.
