OM freezes rent

HARARE - Old Mutual has frozen rental charge increases for the whole of 2011, and further reduced its charges on rented facilities throughout the country.

The property owners recently drove business people away from its properties because they failed to pay rent. The countrys largest landlord also closed its shops through out the country.

In an interview after a meeting in Harare with Old Mutual management, Indigenous Economic Empowerment Organisation president, Paddington Japajapa, said: We are glad that at last Old Mutual has agreed to review down wards its monthly rental charges. They have said their charges now range from US$1 per square metre to US$8 per square metre a charge which we all believe is fair. They have also promised not to increase charges for the rest of this year, a development which we have all welcomed.

Old Mutual was in trouble with the countrys black empowerment lobby group, Affirmative Action Group, which accused it of charging discriminatory rentals to indigenous Zimbabweans.
