MDC provincial executive were vetting and registering its Johannesburg district officials ahead of the elective congress set for Durban on 19th March when the intruder secretly released the tear gas pressure forcing women and babies to cough.
The disruptive incident saw MDC South Africa Chairman, Austin Moyo, temporarily stop addressing the gathering as he urged the security to manhunt the culprit.
“We have been infiltrated! We have an uninvited guest among us and we must weed him out immediately,” said Moyo.
After a few minutes of thorough investigation and search resulted in the suspect being picked up for questioning.
“This man stays at Central Methodist Church and has a strong link with Zanu PF,” said Giyani Dube, former MDC Youth chairman for Joburg district.
The local MDC leadership could not immediately establish the motive for the tear gas attack.
It is a common phenomenon to Zimbabwean politics that during election time increased political violence, intimidation and threats are orders of the day.
