Hon. Douglas Mwonzora and 25 others’ appeal postponed to wednesday

douglas_mwonzora2The High Court appeal by Nyanga North MP, Hon. Douglas Mwonzora (pictured) and 25 other MDC members challenging their further detention at Mutare Remand Prison was today postponed to Wednesday after some of the appeal papers were found missing.

High Court judge, Justice Susan Mavangira postponed the hearing after it was discovered that some of the pages written by the Nyanga magistrate who gave Hon. Mwonzora bail two weeks ago were missing while some of the submissions were not readable.

Hon. Mwonzora is facing trumped up political violence charges. He has been in remand prison for the past two weeks after the State invoked the draconian Section 121 of the Criminal and Evidence Act.

Meanwhile, the MDC has pledged to raise the pace of its traditional challenge for democratic space with increased intensity following a decision by the police, on the instructions of Zanu PF, to ban its in-house, national preparations for the party third congress. The party was surprised to learn that all its internal restructuring processes were instantly classified as illegal gatherings in Bulawayo, Mashonaland West and East provinces at the weekend with the police claiming to be under instructions to place Zimbabwe in state of high alert.

The decision is a ruse to justify the sabotage of the MDCs forthcoming Third National Congress.
