Mharakurwa, a revelation since he broke into professional wheelchair tennis four years ago, is yet to win the singles event, but is optimistic of achieving that this year, having come close twice – in 2008 and 2009, when he lost in the semi-finals of the singles category.
He has been more successful in the doubles though, emerging winner in his maiden appearance in 2008 and runner-up in 2009. He bowed out at the quarter-finals in both categories last year. This will be the first tournament I play this year and I really hope to do well in it and surpass my past achievements, Mharakurwa told The Zimbabwean.
Like each of the past editions, this one is also going to be very tough as most of the worlds top players will be playing in this competition, which is a warm-up to the world team cup in South Africa. Promoted by Wheelchair Tennis South Africa (WTSA) in conjunction with Airports Company South Africa, the tournament will be played at the Sun City Resort on April 18-22. The tennis sensation has won Zimbabwes Annual National Sports Awards (ANSA) Sportsman with a Disability three times on the trot in 2008 and 2009 and 2010.
