Junior tennis players set to shine

HARARE - A 12-member team will represent the country at the junior Davies Cup, Fed Cup and World Junior tennis competition qualifiers set for Cairo Egypt, next month.

The showdown that will run from June 20-26 will see local Under-16 boys and girls seeking to prove a rising force to reckon with during the junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup qualifiers respectively. Their juniors, the Under-14s will take part in the World Tennis Competition qualifiers.

The junior players have generated a lot of confidence in the tennis circles with great potential of reviving Zimbabwes lost glory in the courts. The junior tennis team recently made a name for the country when they finished a respectable fifth out of 28 countries at the African Junior Championships held in Botswana.

The junior Davis Cup qualifiers will highlight the countrys young talent as the pair of Ronzai Saurombe and Taremeredzwa Mariga represents Zimbabwe while the trio of Courtney Lock, Tadiwa Mberi and Michael Mandingwa battle it out for the other place.

The Zimbabweans will be hunting to win the only available ticket to the Junior Davis Cup competitions alongside other four countries that include hosts Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, DRC, with a possibility of being joined by Mauritius who are on standby.

Zimbabwe last took part in the Fed Cup back in 1996 and Valeria Bhunu, Thabile Tshatedi and Lorraine Mandingwa seek to break their nations silence when they battle for a place at the event against players from Egypt, South Africa, Morocco, Algeria and Mauritius.

Six players – Chinamo, Alywn Mushonga, Ngoni Chiwetete (Boys), Nicole Dzenga and Karen Muswere (Girls) who will be joined by one more player after a playoff- are expected to fly their countrys flag high in the Under-14 World Junior Tennis Competition qualifiers.

The girls will compete against players from Namibia, Morocco, Tunisia, Ghana and hosts Egypt while fellow countrymen face opponents from South Africa, Nigeria, Morocco, Ghana and Egypt.
