He was the guest of honour at recent World Red Cross Day Celebrations which coincided with a Zimbabwe Red Cross Society charity ball. Guramatunhu is also a philanthropist engaged in charity and humanitarian work through the Guramatunhu Family Trust. The trust has paid for scores of orphans and vulnerable children to attain academic and professional qualifications in various disciplines across the country and abroad.
They have attended some of the country’s leading institutions, including Midlands State university, Solusi University and Bindura University of Science Education, as well as Harvard University in the USA. One of the students graduated recently from Harvard University as a qualified Eye Specialist Surgeon.
As a sign of recognition for his distinctive contribution, Gurumatunhu was given the Merit Award as a Friend of the ZRCS.
In accepting the award he said, “We have a great challenge before us. Zimbabwe must adopt and practice humanitarian diplomacy. Who are we? We have a lot of rich people in this country and they are not doing enough to promote human dignity and value. They must go an extra mile and invest in our society and humanity.”
ZRCS Vice President Mandhlankulu Moyo challenged the Zimbabwean society. “Are we always going to receive from international partners yet we have great people with lots of money – some with carports filled with over 15 cars. One can be tempted to think they are car manufacturers. We all die and leave these material things. When do we start building legacies? Why dont we use this wealth to build schools, libraries and hospitals.
