In the past three months the tournaments, in which boxers from all the countrys provinces are drawn to fight for honours, have been held in Triangle, Bulawayo and Gweru. ZABA Secretary General, Goodwill Sibanda, said that so far the tournaments had exposed great talent with a potential of raising Zimbabwe up the international ranks.
We have succeeded in identifying talent among the boxers who have taken part in the tournaments and I think come September, we will be in a position to make the nation proud at the All Africa games, he said. Sibanda also revealed that the final Zimbabwe team for the September games is yet to be put together, in order to keep the boxers on their toes. We would want to travel with the best team of boxers and we have not yet put up a final list as part of strategies to ensure that rivalry among our boxers is heightened. We will be able to take only the cream for the games.
Sibanda bemoaned the stance taken by the Sports and Recreation Commission that only three boxers would be accommodated in the final squad. He said ZABA wanted eight boxers to be taken to Maputo in September because its less expensive to do so than it was when Zimbabwe took part in the Algerian edition of the games four years ago. The flight then went via France.
This time around its surely possible for us to take eight boxers because travelling costs are much lower because no one will be flying. We are still talking to SRC on that matter because we feel that way we will be able to bring home more medals, Sibanda said. The Masiyambumbi brothers Steven and Foster, Josphat Mufoyi and Emmanuel Mashiri are some of the countrys prestigious boxers who can bring home medals.
