At last, people are being informed on the constitution-writing issues, but few really care about thematic committees. Perhaps they would have, had the media campaign been more vigorous during the outreach programme. But it was not and only a few people participated. Many people were left out of perhaps the biggest event in the countrys history. Now it is perhaps a little too late for COPAC to take the constitution to the people. No amount of adverts can reverse the fact that few people participated during the critical stages.
And today adverts such as: The Constitution Select Committee would like to inform Zimbabweans that the Thematic Committee stage of the constitution making process is well underway and is expected to be completed in the next two weeks are a common feature in the papers, and ZBC is raking in large sums of money from the adverts which
sometimes are broadcast at five minutes intervals.
Ordinary Zimbabweans have dismissed the adverts as coming far too late. The adverts are not necessary at all. I for one did not participate in the outreach programme because I was not aware of such an event and now they are talking about thematic committees which we do not even know, said Harare resident Ruth Gwena. Lawrence Machenure said he was aware of the constitution-writing process but cannot see how this new found vigour will help him.
They should have done that when the programme began and this would have encouraged people to participate, said Machenure. The National Constitution Assembly has already indicated that it will oppose the process that it alleges has been hijacked by politicians. Last week the NCA vowed to intensify grassroots mobilisation and urge Zimbabweans to reject the COPAC draft and vote no at the referendum.
COPAC is currently asking the treasury to once again give them $1.8 million, and many Zimbabweans ask: for what? They have never really answered but the bloated teams are testimonial of the drains where the money really ends. With an allowance of a $100 a day and nights in finest hotels in the country, COPAC experts are living well and many, in a very small space of time. have bought several properties.

Too late for COPAC adverts
HARARE - COPAC has officially invaded the media, with full colour adverts and primetime slots on TV - even on ZBC, which initially was reluctant to carry the ads.
