CAF acts to stop corruption

The Confederation of African Football says its decision to schedule the match between Zimbabwe and Cape Verde simultaneously with the Liberia versus Mali clash was to avoid match-fixing.

Ahead of the last round of matches, Cape Verde, Mali and Zimbabwe all stand a chance of earning the sole berth at next year’s CAF African Nations Cup qualifying scheduled for Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

In a statement from its Cairo, Egypt headquarters, CAF said the decision to schedule the matches simultaneously was in line with its regulations which were aimed at preventing match-fixing.

It said it would communicate the exact kick off times shortly after all concerned Federations had provided their preferences.

Zimbabwe, who have qualified for the event twice, are in a dog-eat-dog Group A where only last-placed Liberia are out of contention for CAF’s flagship event. With eight points, The Warriors are second behind West Africans Mali and a point above Cape Verde. The Zimbabweans, who seemed down and out after the first round of the qualifiers, have put their campaign back on track with two successive victories over Liberia and Mali.

Their last match is away to Cape Verde, who earlier in the qualifying phase threw the spanner in Zimbabwe’s works, earning a draw in Harare.

A win or a draw against the islanders will put Zimbabwe through if Mali loses against Liberia.
