The case is the first to come in response to a plea by High Court judge Justice Maphios Cheda calling on men who suffer from domestic violence to report such cases.
Rosemary Nyendwa of Senga suburb pleaded guilty to a domestic violence charge when she appeared before magistrate Siphatekile Msipa.
On August 2, the accused’s husband, Isaac Sithole, collected a rent payment from the couple’s tenants. He then proceeded to a shop in the suburb where he spent all the cash on beer without his wife’s knowledge.
When he got back an argument ensued and Rosemary picked up an iron bar which she used to hit him on head.
In her judgement, the magistrate suspended six months of the sentence on condition of the accused’s good behaviour. A further six months was suspended on the condition that Nyendwa completes 210 hours of community service at Fletcher High School.
