Begun in July, a cash prize is given to the vendor who shows the most improvement in sales each month. The period during which the award has been running coincides with a surge in the paper’s readership. According to the latest ZAMPS results, The Zimbabwean recorded a 100 percent rise in readership in the last quarter, making it the fastest growing weekly in Zimbabwe.

Noah Muirirwa won the July prize, while Feres Gogo bagged the coveted trophy for the month of August. Gogo, who started selling The Zimbabwean in 2005 and operates from the corner of Herbert Chitepo Avenue and Sam Nujoma Street in Harare, could not hide her excitement when she received her prize.

“I am excited that The Zimbabwean has appreciated my work. I am going to work even harder to ensure that the newspaper enjoys bigger sales,” she said.

The newspaper is distributed by Munn Marketing. The company’s Area Supervisor, Tongesai Chese, said the award was great news for vendors and hailed the recent expansion of the paper from 24 to 32 pages.

“Vendors are key stakeholders in the life of any print newspaper. They are the face of the paper and they need to be respected and appreciated,” said the publisher, Wilf Mbanga.
