Presidential Scholarship swindle

Local magistrate, Mildred Mutuvi, will next week deliver judgment in a case of a 46-year-old woman who masqueraded as a Zanu (PF) agent to dupe students intending to study under the presidential scholarship scheme.

Prosecutor Anesu Edwin Hatugari said sometime in July 2009, Elizabeth Tonderai Mudyiradima of Windsor Park, Gweru, met with the first complainant, Frederick Chikomba, and promised him assistance to study under the presidential scholarship at a South African university.

Between July 2009 and January 2010, Chikomba was allegedly asked to pay $686 and R2 400 to process the scholarship after the accused had claimed to be an agent of Zanu (PF). Chikomba complied. Between June 2009 and July 2011, the accused met another education seeker, Rebitha Bangwayo of Mkoba 12, and allegedly promised to secure a place for her son at Fort Hare University in South Africa.

She allegedly demanded R7 100 and $405, saying the money was needed to process fingerprints, passport, study permit, transport and registration fees.

The scholarships, however, never materialised for both victims.
