Jail the bishop: Anglicans

Ex-communicated clergyman, Nolbert Kunonga, has behaved like the devil and people should celebrate his fall, says Precious Shumba, spokesperson for the Anglican Church of the Central Province of Africa led by Archbishop Chad Gandiya. “Kunonga is bad news. His reign of terror was characterised by brutal persecutions of innocent church members - driven by his greed and desperate search for political relevance,” said Shumba in an exclusive interview with The Zimbabwean.

According to Shumba, the church will soon start filing both criminal and civil charges against Kunonga. “Some church properties are no longer accounted for, following the unprecedented asset grab by Kunonga and his colleagues. The church is putting a monetary value to the missing properties in preparation for impending court challenges.”

He said the law suits and criminal charges would be targeted at individuals.

“The church will definitely seek compensation from individuals who benefitted from the property grab madness. Criminals will be called to account, as justice has now been done by the Supreme Court.

There is no way Kunonga will get away with the looting of property belonging to a church he voluntarily left.” Shumba said Kunonga was even worse than the people who assassinated the church’s celebrated martyr, Bernard Mizeki, whose shrine is in Mashonaland East province.

MDC-T National Organizing Secretary, Nelson Chamisa, described the fall of Kunonga as the dawn of a new Zimbabwe.

“Events such as the on-going crumbling of Kunonga’s ‘empire’ signal the beginning of the exit of the old order”.

“These are good signs indicating the dawn of a new Zimbabwe,” said Chamisa.

The MDC-T Member of Parliament for Kuwadzana added: “Kunonga thought he could do as he pleased with Anglican Church parishioners. People should not kid with God. Now it is payback time for him.”
