Justice delayed in rape case

There has been no justice for a 14-year-old girl who was allegedly raped by an 85-year-old traditional chief in Buhera earlier this year as the case is said to be under investigation.

Chief Chitsunge allegedly abused the girl between February and August this year when she stayed with him during the school term.

Nurses at Pokoteke Clinic, who examined the girl, confirmed that she had been raped and ordered the mother to report the case to the police.

The mother reported the matter but no arrest has been made. Manicaland police spokesperson, Inspector Enock Chishiri, confirmed that Chief Chitsunge was under investigation for rape.

“It’s true we have that case where the Chief is alleged to have raped the child. We are still investigating,” said Chishiri.

It is alleged that in September this year Chief Chitsunge took the girl back to her mother claiming she was no longer “respecting” him. In a telephone interview with The Zimbabwean last week the mother said she wanted justice to prevail.

“All I want is justice to take its course. My daughter was raped by the chief,” she said. The mother (name withheld) said the chief asked to take care of the child in order to help the family.

The mother said she had lost confidence in the way the police in Buhera were handling the case.

Justice for Children’s Fund (JCF) Manicaland province coordinator, James Musabayana, said: “This is a clear case where the chief should have been arrested, firstly as a suspect and then he should have gone for trial. We are wondering why the wheels of justice are taking so long to turn.”

Efforts to get a comment from Chief Chitsunge were fruitless.
