A top Zanu (PF) official is pushing for the eviction in an area that falls under the Chirumanzu-Zibangwe constituency represented by Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Trouble for the supporters, most of them women, started in September last year when they were spotted wearing MDC regalia on the day the party held a rally addressed by Ncube.
The event took place in spite of a last minute ban from police who attempted to reverse the clearance they had issued.
“We have not known peace in this area since that day,” said Merryline Rwodzi, one of the MDC local supporters.
In the latest development, Simon Sigauke, a former Zanu (PF) Chairperson of the party’s disbanded District Coordinating Committee, has put up posters in the compound calling on all residents who wish to stay to tender their names “for vetting”.
This week he called for a meeting of all residents in the compound where he openly declared that the place should be “cleansed from being a haven of MDC supporters”.
However, Sigauke is not the owner of the compound. The place is now in the hands of Jaison Maklen who took over from his late father. Nhanhla Dube, the MDC spokesperson described the situation as structured harassment flying in the face of the Global Political Agreement.
“We cannot have a scenario where one party claims sacrosanct ownership of people. We will defend that through legal channels of the GPA,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from Sigauke were fruitless as he was reported to be away at the time of going to print.
