Eric Matinenga mourns Makumbe

Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Eric Matinenga says he cannot make a decision about his political future as he is still grieving for John Makumbe who died on January 27.

The MP for Buhera South had endorsed Makumbe to take over the reins from him at the end of the GNU.

“I hope everyone is aware that we have just lost a dear and invaluable colleague and that it is too early to start revisiting future plans while tears are still running down our cheeks. Why can’t the media respect culture and wait for the right time to discuss such issues. I loved Makumbe so much that it would be difficult for me to talk about the previously agreed succession plan,” said Matinenga.

“Remember I am a democrat and really would love a situation whereby someone takes over from where I leave the people’s service. Zimbabwe and Buhera have equally capable MDC people who can assume roles of MP should I leave office as I intend to do,” he added.

After the mourning period he will consult with elders and other interested people about the way forward.

“Though people’s suggestions would be respected, I am convinced the same people will be in a position to consider my position. MDC politics is all about team work so we will see when the time comes,” said Matinenga.

MDC-T Organising Secretary, Nelson Chamisa late last month revealed that his party was making efforts to convince Matinenga to stay in active politics.

Asked on the way forward should Matinenga keep on with his retirement plans, Mwonzora said the MDC-T would have to consider applications put forward by party members interested in contesting for the Buhera West seat.
