Minister’s son is new councillor

The former Minister of Finance Samuel Mumbengegwi’s son has been appointed a special interest councillor in the Masvingo city council. This follows complaints that Local Government Minister Ignatius Chombo had exceeded his limit of appointing special interest councillors in the Masvingo authority.

Masvingo City Council is supposed to have 10 councillors and, according to the urban councils act, Chombo should only appoint one third of the elected slot as special interest councillors. The council currently has 50 percent special interest councillors appointed by Chombo. Fabian Mbaya, Christine Chivhanga, former city Town Clerk, Tsunga Mhangami and Samuel Mumbengegwi Junior now sit in the council chambers as special interest councillors.

Mumbengegwi Junior assumed his duties as a special interest councillor with the Mayor of Masvingo Alderman Chakabuda describing him as an intelligent man.

“He is very intelligent judging from the contributions he makes in council”.

“He was just appointed by the minister and we have nothing to do with that,” said Chakabuda. “He is representing people with disabilities and is such a good young man.”

The father is now a junior lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University.
