Rural councillor perseveres

Marondera East Rural MDC-T ward 19 councillor, Samuel Machekanyanga, has weathered political polarisation and made a difference in a predominately Zanu (PF) council and hostile constituency.

Being one of only four MDC-T city fathers against 17 Zanu (PF) members, Machekanyanga realised it would take great resilience to depoliticise council operations for the benefit of rate payers and communities across the political divide.

“I partly created enemies for myself because of my spirited resolve to foster transparency, accountability and transform Marondera Rural District Council into a people-centred rural authority.

“Despite having a fully fledged and elected policy making council, MRDC would operate under political dictates from the ministry of local government headquarters in Harare.

“Despite mounting threats, I have told people that there is nothing appreciable about Zanu (PF) distributing farm inputs and drought relief food to the poor, since it was a political strategy by Zanu (PF) to keep people poor for political purposes. The party wants people to kneel down with begging bowls in hand ahead of elections.

“Traditional leadership was not spared my free and daring lectures. I warned them in no uncertain terms to desist from being partisan as judgement day would surely come. Most of them have since changed their ways.”

Machekanyanga said his resilience and determination to bring about a just society would take months if not years.
