Addressing hundreds of MDC-T supporters at a rally held at Mukandabhutsu Shopping Centre in Msasa, Biti said: “Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai will meet President Robert Mugabe and the other principal at their routine Monday meeting and suggest the referendum date be postponed”.
Biti said MDC-T would also propose that coming harmonised elections be held over two days instead of the previously suggested one day, as the electorate needed more time to vote.
“If the referendum date is pushed to the end of April, the government will have ample time to source funds for the exercise,” said Biti. The call follows threats by National Constitutional Assembly Chairperson Lovemore Madhuku, that he would sue GNU leadership for not giving people enough time to study the draft constitution before the referendum.
“Now that principals to the GNU have set the date for the referendum, NCA is preparing a legal challenge to sue them. People need enough time to study the contents of the draft,” said Madhuku.
He said the violence that followed the outreach process and ‘sickening’ party negotiations which resulted in the two MDCs making ridiculous concessions to Zanu (PF) rendered the whole process not people-driven. Madhuku vowed to ‘protect’ voices of the people and would campaign for a “No Vote.”
MDC-T Deputy Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs Obert Gutu urged party supporters at a recent Msasa rally to cast a “Yes Vote” at the referendum.
“Vote Yes because the new constitution is a product of MDC. Zanu (PF) never wanted the constitution to see the light of the day,” said Gutu.
He urged all MDC supporters to register to vote.
