Fraud claims

Malaysia’s opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has called for supporters to protest against last weekend’s election result. The National Coalition which has ruled for 50 years was returned. Ibrahim claims the government rigged the result.

Nazi arrest

Authorities in Germany have arrested a 93-year-old former guard at the notorious concentration camp Auschwitz. Local media says Hans Lipschis had claimed he was a cook at the death camp, but evidence suggests he was a prison supervisor.

Friend released

A friend of the alleged Boston Marathon bomber has been released on bail. Three friends of the Dzhokhar Tzarnaev were arrest last weekend accused of failing to turn him over to authorities. The other teenagers remain in prison.

Election carnage

A bomb attack at an election rally in Pakistan has killed 18 people. Fifty-five people were also wounded in the deadliest attack since campaigning began last month. Pakistani Taliban promptly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Crisis escalates

The United Nations has moved to distance itself from a report suggesting rebels in Syria had used chemical weapons. The report comes as the crisis in the war-torn country escalated, with suggestions Israel had launched mortar on the country.

Exports halted

Australia has suspended its lucrative live export trade with Egypt after footage emerged of cattle being mistreated. Thousands of Australian livestock are sent for slaughter overseas annually. The government said ordered a review of the practice.

Trial begins

A German woman accused of running a group of deadly neo-Nazi killers has gone on trial over armed robbery, arson and bomb attacks. The group was discovered in 2011 and believed responsible for the deaths of Turkish and Greek immigrants.

Island in shock

A politician on the tiny Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao has been shot dead. Helmin Wiels, 54, had been a vocal campaigner of the country’s separatist movement. The prime minister said the island of 150,000 people was “in shock”.

Missiles removed?

North Korea has reportedly removed missile launches set up at its coast last month amid declarations of nuclear war with the South and the United States. A Pentagon spokesman declined to comment on the reports but said provocation had paused.

Terrorists jailed

Two Iranian men have been jailed for life in Kenya, accused of terrorism-related offences. The middle-aged men were detained in June 2012 with 33 kilograms of explosives believed to be part of a plot to bomb Nairobi and costal city Mombasa.

Drug claims

A medical expert has told a court the body of late pop star Michael Jackson was drugged like somebody about to undergo surgery when he died. Jackson’s family are suing promoters who hired the doctor caring for him when he died.

PM dies

Former long-serving Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti has died aged 94. He first entered parliament in 1945 and served as prime minister on seven occasions between 1972 and 1992. He was made a senator for life in 1991.
