Workers demonstrate in Bulawayo

Thousands of workers in Bulawayo on Saturday participated in the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union (ZCTU) organized demonstrations, pressurizing the government to address the deteriorating living standards of workers.

The placards and poster wielding workers started the demonstrations at the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) regional officers along George Silundika in the morning before proceeding to Mhlanhlandela government complex where they left a petition which they intended to deliver to Eunice Sandi Moyo, the Bulawayo Metropolitan Residence minister.

The workers who were led by ZCTU regional officials were singing the song Ndikafunga pay yangu ndinorwadziva (If I think about my salary I get worried) The workers were escorted by riot police following Zanu (PF) Friday’s threats to block the demonstrations.

A group of Zanu (PF) supporters on Friday besieged the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) regional offices in Bulawayo protesting against the demonstrations.

“Salary Cut Isisebenzi –Yiyala (Salary cuts do not work .We do not want the salary cuts) “reads one of the placards in reference to government‘s recent treat to freeze wages.

Initially police in the city refused to ok the demonstrations, but changed their minds taking a cue from the Harare police who authorized the demonstrations.
