Rusike’s turn of fortunes

Warriors striker Matthew Rusike, who recently won his maiden league title with Kaizer Chiefs, has described the turnaround in his fortunes as ‘amazing.’ Exactly a year after suffering the humiliation of relegation to the first division with Jomo Cosmos, Rusike is celebrating a league triumph.

“In terms of my luck, turning around from being relegated to winning the league title, it is amazing,” he told The Zimbabwean after Chiefs won their first league title in eight years. It is a great achievement to lift such a prestigious award. It was a long and hard season and we pulled together well. We worked hard. I have fought at the bottom and at the top of the league and I know the feeling of real pressure. I am happy God has given me the opportunity to showcase my talent.”

Besides the Cosmos debacle, Rusike also had the ignominy of being dumped by Premiership rookies, University of Pretoria in 2011, while injuries have also hampered his progress.

“I was unlucky with injuries late in the season, but I will be back to defend the trophy next season. As for now, I am focusing on the Nedbank Cup Final and then the World Cup qualifiers against Egypt,” said Rusike.

Chiefs face off with Nedbank Cup defending champions, Supersport United in the finals at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
