Econet last year sponsored PSL to the tune of Z$10 billion. Players were required to wear the Buddy tee shirts provided by the sponsor. Net One jumped in to sponsor CAPS and spent the entire season wrangling over the wearing of tee shirts. Frustrated, Econet declined to renew sponsorship for 2006.
CAPS are now being sponsored by Diamond Insurance and they donned their new kit in the preliminary round second leg qualifier against Inter Stars of Burundi at the National Sports Stadium last Sunday, which ended 0-0.
Media reports say Net One has refused to pay the money it promised because of the departure of a number of senior players.
But Joe Makuvire, the club’s general manager said they were still in talks with the mobile phone operator and denied allegations that they had not paid up. CAPS begin the defence of their title with a game against Zimbabwe Saints at Barbourfields next weekend. – Sports correspondent
CAPS seek Z$12 billion
HARARE – Zimbabwe football giants, CAPS United will need a staggering US$60,000 (approximately Z$12 billion) to travel to Morocco for the first round, first leg tie of the African Champions League in Morocco this weekend.
CAPS United, like most clubs in Zimbabwe, are finding the going tough due to a crippling six-year old economic crisis blamed on President Robert Mugabe’s government.
Last month, the Harare giants had to be bailed out by the government after Vice President Joseph Msika intervened on their behalf.
Meanwhile, Zambian international Laughter Chilembe has rejoined the Harare giants after trying unsuccessfully to join clubs in South Africa.
Chilembe failed to report for training at the beginning of the season after indicating he wanted to seek greener pastures elsewhere. Chilembe’s availability will come as good news to coach Charles Mhlauri who was desperate to strengthen his defence. – ZimOnline
