Mwaruwari in SA for physio

JOHANNESBURG - Benjani Mwaruwari is currently in South Africa for physiotherapy treatment on a troublesome knee. He is making good progress and expects to be fully fit in a few months.

The Zimbabwe-born striker soared to fame when he scored the goal that saved English premiership side Portsmo

uth from relegation by a 2-1 league victory over Wigan.

Mwaruwari arrived in England from French side Auxerre in January, but he went 13 league matches without scoring. Thankfully, coach Harry Redknapp kept faith in the striker – and this was eventually repaid.

“It is not pleasant for a striker not to score goals, but Redknapp believed in me because of my high work rate,” Mwaruwari told the press in SA. “I worked hard at training and I was creating chances for my teammates during matches, so he knew it was only a matter of time before I got my name on the score sheet.”

He said he was happy playing in the English Premiership because it suited his style of play. “The English game is fast and it is all about fighting spirit. Those are qualities I possess,” he said.

Mwaruwari has not forgotten his country – before the African Cup of Nations in Egypt, he funded the Zimbabwean national team’s preparatory camp in France. During the camp, the Zimbabweans played friendly matches against Guinea, Morocco and his former French Ligue 1 club Auxerre.

Despite making a financial sacrifice, Mwaruwari does not expect favours from the national coach, or Zimbabwe officials.”I am just another player who is trying his best to see the national team do well,” he said.
While based overseas, Mwaruwari follows the fortunes of football in Zimbabwe and thinks standards there are improving.

“The game is heading in the right direction, but I think we need to get more players to Europe to gain experience in the tough leagues there,” he said. – Sports reporter
