ehind joint leaders Manchester United and Chelsea who won 2-0 and 2-1 at home to Liverpool and Portsmouth respectively. French ace Thierry Henry started and finished the scoring as Arsenal, who started the season slowly, cruised to a fifth successive Premiership victory, 4-0 at Reading.
Nigeria’s Yakubu headed an 85th-minute clincher as Middloesbrough beat visitors Newcastle 1-0 in the North-East derby and Egypt’s Mido scored superbly from a half-chance in Tottenham’s 1-0 home defeat of struggling West Ham. That seventh straight Premiership defeat leaves West Ham in the relegation zone along with Charlton and Watford who shared a goalless draw at Charlton.
In League Two rock-bottom Macclesfield, despite drawing 0-0 at Bristol Rovers, are still without a win after 15 matches. Meanwhile, Jamie Forrester’s third hat-trick of the season inspired Lincoln to thrash visitors Rochdale 7-1.
In the Scottish Premier, Celtic are eight points clear at the top after a 2-1 home win over Motherwell who scored first. Second-placed Hearts slipped up 2-0 at home to Kilmarnock.
