Matawu, Gomba ‘Not for sale’

BULAWAYO – Zimbabwean soccer champions, Highlanders might fail to get any of the high-profile players they had targeted to sign for the lucrative African Champions League showcase next year, following reports that clubs are reluctant to release players to the Bulawayo giants.

According to sources within the club, Motor Action and Hwange have flatly refused to release two of the midfielders that “Bosso” had targeted, after putting “Not-for-sale” tugs on them.

“Motor Action were the first to refuse with Clement Matawu, after Highlanders had written to them asking to be sold the player last week. Their chief of protocol, Simeon Jamanda wrote to us early this week, saying Matawu was not for sale to any local club. Hwange have also refused to part ways with Carrington Gomba, saying he is their most prized asset,” said a source privy to the negotiations.

The sources say that the two clubs did not even ask for Bosso to put offers for the two players.

Highlanders Chairman, Enerst “Maphepha” Sibanda, confirmed to The Zimbabwean that his club was having difficulties in signing local players.

“Most clubs do not want to release players to us because of various reasons. However, there are some players that we are close to signing, whose names we cannot release at the moment, so that we do not prejudice the negotiations. We will, however, unvail them to the press as soon as we sign them. There are some high-profile names that we are sure of signing though,” he said, without naming the European clubs.

Motor Action owner, Eric Rosen, also confirmed that his club would not release Matawu because the player was “too good” for any Zimbabwean club.

“There are some European clubs that are interested in his services and we can only release him to any of the foreign clubs. We will be killing his talent if we release him to any local club,” he said.

Although Sibanda refused to furnish this paper with any names of the players, sources within the club revealed that former Bosso junior, right back Hlanganani Ngwenya, whose contract with Hwange expires at the end of this month, might turn out for the club next season. Shabanie Mine midfield destroyer, Shadreck Malunga, Chapungu’s Ricky Sibiya and Philip Marufu, as well as former Warriors playmaker, Ronald Sibanda, are also some of the players that Bosso are said to be on the brink of signing.

Unconfirmed reports have also indicated that coach Methembe Ndlovu might be registered for the African safari to boost the team’s arsenal.

After the departure of goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini (Silver Stars, SA), Master Masiku (Mbabane Swallows, Swaziland) and Vusa Nyoni (Circle Bruge, Belgium), Bosso’s depth was left exposed as they nearly threw away their championship chase. They had to rely on the inconsistency of the chasing pack to clinch the title they surrendered to now-defunct city rivals, Amazulu.

The club desperately needs another goalkeeper to replace Kapini. They also need two good strikers, as their chief marksman, Ralph Matema, is set to leave for South Africa‘s Orlando Pirates in January. They have to register the squad that will do battle in the tough terrain by Saturday. – Sports correspondent
