MUSINA – The Zimbabwe national team trio of Bekithemba Ndlovu, Joel Luphahla and Tapuwa Kapini are in the running to win a league and cup double as the fairytale run of their club, Silver Stars, continues in the South African Premier Soccer League.

Halfway into the premiership, the modest but high-flying Limpopo outfit currently sits comfortably at the top of the log, a stranglehold it has maintained for several months.

Stars are also hot favourites to land the lucrative Telkom Knockout, the richest domestic cup competition in the continent, when they face Ajax Cape Town in the final of the minnows next week (December 16).

The on-fire club made their intentions known by knocking out local cup kings Kaizer Chiefs en-route to the Telkom final.

Assistant coach Thierry Mulonzo acknowledged the value of the Warriors trio. “They are a significant part of the team’s set up,” he told CAJ News.

Tough-as-nails defender Ndlovu is currently one of the most outstanding defenders in the local topflight and has been a vital cog in defence where he has struck a formidable rearguard with onetime Bafana Bafana defender Willem Jackson.

Luphahla is on top of his game striking fear among opposing wingbacks notably in the 2-1 victory that sent favourites Chiefs crashing out of the Telkom Knockout.

Although he has not seen much action since his move from Highlanders, Kapini’s presence at the ‘Lions of the North’ has drawn the best out of first choice goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands.

The trio is undoubtedly among the most experienced players in the team. Boasting numerous African Nations Cup finals appearances among them, the fact that they have won countless League and Cup trophies back home is enough to spur the youngsters all the way.

Despite meagre financial and technical resources, Silver Stars is the Castle Premiership’s most consistent team.

The irresistible form of the Rustenberg-based outfit in their four seasons in the PSL makes the millions that sponsors pour into the coffers of the rest of the teams in the League appear like money down the drain. – CAJ News
