WALTER SMITH KICKS OFF IN STYLE

By JOHN HUGHES
Walter Smith, having controversially quit as Scotland manager, made a dream start to his second spell with Rangers by inspiring the Glasgow giants to a 5-0 home win over Dundee United in the Scottish Premier. Skipper Barry Ferguson, stripped of the captaincy by Smith's predecessor,

completed the scoring.
But second-placed Rangers remain 17 points behind arch rivals Celtic who came from behind to win 2-1 at Hearts.
The top two in England also won, Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo heading leaders Manchester United’s final goal in a 3-1 home win over faltering Aston Villa. Title-holders Chelsea crushed woeful Wigan 4-0 at Stamford Bridge, Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba rounding things off with his 21st goal of the season.
Thierry Henry scored a wonder goal as 10-man Arsenal, whose Brazilian star Gilberto was red-carded after only 13 minutes, won 2-0 at in-form Blackburn. The French ace waltzed past several players in a 50-yard run from deep inside his own half before taking a return pass and rifling in a first-time 20-yard shot.
Obafemi Martins, the Nigeria striker, scored a stunning goal for Newcastle in their palpitating 3-2 victory at Tottenham. Moments after making it 2-2 with an explosive shot he set up Nicky Butt’s 74th-minute winner with a clever reverse pass.
West Ham remain in real relegation trouble after being held in a 3-3 thriller at home to Fulham who equalised in stoppage-time. The Hammers, who led 2-1 and 3-2 with Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun scoring twice, lost two players to injury in the opening 11 minutes, then were reduced to 10 men for the last 15 minutes after Bobby Zamora was sent off.
Chelsea visit third-placed Liverpool this Saturday. Next day Arsenal, lying fourth and without the suspended Gilberto, host Manchester United.
