Chess master ‘conned'(01-02-07)

HARARE - Zimbabwe's international chess master, Robert Gwaze, received nothing for winning the gold medal at the 2002 Chess Olympiad - and now there are allegations that some sports administrators could have cheated the young player.
The Chess Olympiad is the sport's most prestigious internationa

l tournament and Gwaze shocked the world by scooping the gold medal in 2002 in Slovenia at the age of 20.
According to the international mother body, FIDE, the winner of the gold medal doesn’t get any prize money at the tournament but is paid by his government or national sports association. Other players that have won gold at the Olympiad have been given amounts of up to US$50 000 by their countries.
Gwaze, who is currently teaching chess at the ASEAN Chess Academy in Malaysia, is back home on vacation and told The Zimbabwean that he had been promised monetary rewards but nothing came through.
“I had been assured by Charles Kuwaza, who accompanied me to the Olympiad, that there would be some money. The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) also promised they would arrange for some prize money,” he said.
Kuwaza, a former government minister, has been promoting chess in the country and is understood to have raised funds from well-wishers for Gwaze’s prize money. The same applies to the SRC, which sources said had secured funds to reward Gwaze.
Neither Musangeya nor Kawaza could be reached for comment. – CAJ News
