Nyoni heads North
BULAWAYO - Former AmaZulu Football Club left-footer and Zimbabwe Under-23 captain, Vusimuzi Nyoni, has signed a two-year contract with Belgian premiership outfit Cercle Brugge.
The new contract will see Nyoni stay in Brussels to the end of 2009. Nyoni will be playing a


longside fellow countryman Honour Gombami, who signed a five-month contract. – CAJ News
Wigan move delayed
CAPE TOWN – Warriors defender Zvenyika Makonese said he was confident of making the grade at English side Wigan despite his intended move to Europe being put on hold until the end of the current season by his South African Premiership side Santos.
Speaking from Cape Town Makonese, who was in England on trails at Stock City, said the delay would not dampen his spirit but would give him time to learn more and improve his game before he leaves for Wigan.
“I had the feel of how the English game is played. I will continue working hard as well as monitoring how Wigan play before I leave for England at the end of the season,” Makonesa said. – Sports Reporter
Soccer gets sponsorship
AFTER failing to attract sponsorship last season, the domestic football seem has started on a positive note after Nestle Zimbabwe poured Z$100m into a three-year partnership with PSL for the season-opening Charity Shield.
Dubbed the Champion of Champions Nestle Charity Shield, the two-legged final will feature league champions Highlanders and CBZ Cup winners Mwana Africa later this month.
The first leg will be played at the ‘potato field’ in Trojan on February 17 with the second leg set for Barbourfields on February 25.
The winners will get Z$25m while the losers will take home Z$15m. The proceeds for the two matches will be donated to charities.
A new sponsor for the Premiership championship, who is said to have already committed Z$600m, will be unveiled soon. – Sports Reporter
Boxing bouts cancelled
The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Board of Control has cancelled two international fights so that the national heavyweight champion Thamsanga Dube can fight in Australia.
Dube was scheduled to fight against Collin Absalomon of South Africa in Pretoria on February 7, before facing Joseph Zulu from Zambia on February 27.
The board has instead certified Dube to travel to Australia for a World Boxing Association elimination fight against Shayne Cameroon of Australia on March 21, Dube’s first international fight outside the country. – Sports Reporter
Striker arrested
HARARE – Dynamos striker Alick Marime was arrested on charges of stealing two mobile phones worth Z$800 000 from two aides to the popular Harare club.
Marime was taken into custody on Thursday last week on charges of stealing a Nokia 3100 handset from Nathan Gwanzura, aide in the Dynamos’ transport and logistics committee, and a Nokia 7520 from one of the gate marshals at Dynamos, Misheck Chigwedere.
Gwanzura alleges Marime disappeared with his phone on January 14 while Chigwedere said he was conned out of his handset on Wednesday last week. The marshal alleges that Marime took the phone on the pretext of going to buy airtime for it.
“I had known the player for a long time and did not suspect anything,” Chigwedere said. – Sports Reporter
