Soccer players to be dope tested

HARARE - ALL Premier Soccer League matches this season will be subjected to random anti-doping tests as the CBZ Premier League seeks to align itself with other major leagues in the world in stopping the use of performance-enhancing drugs.
Under the new arrangement two players would be randomly se

lected from each club for tests at the end of a match and anyone found to have tested positive for banned drugs risks a life-ban from Fifa. Team doctors, whose players will be found to have used performance-enhancing drugs, may also be liable to charges of assisting their players to take banned drugs.
Fifa doping control officer for Zimbabwe, Edward Chagonda, said he had already laid the ground to conduct doping tests when the season starts. “We would like to carry out anti-doping tests at Premiership matches this season.
“An anti-doping room has been set up at Rufaro and it’s now nearing completion while I will be travelling to Bulawayo to look at setting up the facilities at Barbourfields,” he said.
Clubs will not be told when the anti-doping team will prey on them and which players will be tested. Chagonda hopes to add the National Sports Stadium to the list of doping centres.
“If the National Sports Stadium is re-opened it will make my job easier. It is currently under renovation. But for now, we have to set up world class doping rooms at Rufaro and Barbourfields in line with Fifa requirements,” he said. – Sport reporter
